The world revolves around light

Light Foundry, LLC is a startup based in Boulder, Colorado that makes the software LightStanza, a web application for electric lighting and daylight simulations.

We are a group of passionate engineers, scientists, environmentalists, artists, and architects.

Light regulates the way we eat, sleep, live, work and play. Yet in design, lighting is often overlooked, and almost always oversimplified. It is either misunderstood or under-utilized, both as a dynamic spatial element of a room, and in the overall energy efficiency of a building.

Our founder set out to create a best-in-class lighting tool that everyone can use. Therefore, LightStanza is unique in its focus on lighting as a piece of the green building puzzle. We know that light can’t be represented by a single number, so we offer several analysis options, each of which tells a different piece of the story. We address daylight alone so that we can get it right. We compute annual metrics, offer space-by-space scores for the LEED Daylight Credit, pinpoint areas of potential glare, and more, all with the precision and accuracy that only a focused tool can offer.

We are not about developing “green” software, but about bringing awareness to a troubled environment by looking at light.

Most recently, we have also come out with our electric lighting analysis tool. Our goal is to make the lives of everyone in lighting easier and more enjoyable.

Daniel Glaser, PhD

Founder & PRINCIPAL

Dan leads LightStanza’s R+D efforts, recognized by Innovation Research Grants awarded by the Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) and is a frequent speaker at major industry venues including Greenbuild, LightFair International and the DOE Radiance Workshop on daylight metrics, web-based simulation tools, and daylight technologies.

Dr. Glaser is an active member of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) Daylight Metrics Committee, and has published extensively in several top-tier computer, building science and human-centered technology venues. Glaser received a BS in Computer Science from Columbia University, MEng Computer Science from Cornell, and MS Arch and Interdisciplinary PhD from UC Berkeley. Prior to founding LightStanza, Glaser was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Glaser is an ethically motivated vegetarian, and doesn’t own a car because he has to save all his money to support his summer watermelon habit. He enjoys riding his fold-up bike between meetings and to and from airports.

Josh Newsom

software engineer

Josh is a graduate of the Full Stack Immersive program at Galvanize’s West Pearl location. Before that he made wooden jigsaw puzzles with lasers. He has a double bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Germanic Studies from the University of Colorado at Boulder. In his spare time he enjoys listening to and playing music of all types and spending time with his dogs, Cookie and Muffin. He currently lives in Longmont.

Mike DiPompeo

Software engineer

Mike received his PhD in astrophysics from the University of Wyoming and has observed supermassive black holes with some of the largest telescopes in the world. Living in the Rocky Mountains and along the Appalachian trail, his love for the outdoors blossomed, and he decided to take his problem solving, computing and physics skills to LightStanza where environmentalism plays a central role in design. He enjoys hiking, playing guitar, and spending time with his wife Shannon and their dog Moose.

Mitch Massey

software engineer INTERN

Mitch Massey is a Senior at the University of Colorado at Boulder studying Computer Science. When he is not at school or at the LightStanza office, he’s practicing and competing with the CU Mountain Bike Team. Mitch also loves traveling and camping with friends.

Connor Covele

Advertising and marketing intern

Connor is currently studying Advertising, along with a business minor at the University of Colorado Boulder. When he’s away from school and work, Connor loves the outdoors of Colorado, including camping and fishing.  He also enjoys playing basketball and Football.

Katie Strohm

Technical Marketing, Education, and Design Intern

Katie currently studies Architectural Engineering with an optional focus in Lighting/Electrical Systems as a rising 5th year at Penn State University. When she’s not at school or work, Katie dedicates her free time to reading, painting, music, exercising and hanging out with her fellow Penn Staters. A 3rd generation Penn Stater herself, Katie is an avid PSU Football fan and can be caught during the fall bleeding blue and white as one of Beaver Stadium’s #107kstrong. WE ARE…
